WHAT ARE BAFFLES AND WHY ARE THEY IMPORTANT?
A septic tank has something called an inlet and outlet baffle. Baffles are part of the tank construction and are usually made from concrete. Inlet baffles help to slow down the flow of liquid entering the tank and decreases turbulence, which allows solids to settle at the bottom of the tank. An outlet baffle helps capture and retain solids, preventing them from leaving the tank and travelling into your septic absorption area.
WHAT HAPPENS WITHOUT A PROPERLY FUNCTIONING OUTLET BAFFLE?
A tank without an outlet baffle can have a negative impact on the longevity of your septic system and can cause premature failure. Without an outlet baffle which is functioning properly, solids can escape and cause a coating to build up in the absorption area. The coating can seal the area and prevent liquids from being properly absorbed, which inhibits the breakdown of solids and leads to bacterial growth.
REPLACE YOUR OUTLET BAFFLES !
Potential problems with you septic system can sometimes be avoided by simply replacing your outlet baffle by inserting a new plastic sanitary tee. This procedure will help retain solids, slow down bacterial growth, and help protect the absorption area.
